Bilsby, Holy Trinity

Our mission

  • We wish to keep attending Church regularly whenever possible.
  • We are committed to spread goodwill and helping our fellow men.
  • Our three different forms of service bring different individuals within the church family, and this is what we want to maintain.
  • The church should respond to the changing times and needs of the community as a whole, as well as to the needs of members of the church.
  • We wish to see increased measures to bring young people into the Church through a liberal and more relaxed atmosphere, and less "Doom, Gloom, and Sin" on the agenda, and a lighter happier atmosphere within the Church as a whole.
  • "One-off' special occasion services, with invitations to all who live in the Parish, are a valuable asset in practising "Outreach”.

Our Church

The parish of Bilsby is a rural village set amidst agricultural farmland and consists of just over 100 homes, with a population of approximately 300 people.

Jobs within the village are confined to the farms, shop, garage and pub, and most people in employment travel to local towns.

Almost central in the village is the Spar shop, post office and petrol station. There is also a pub, The Three Tuns. The church building with its churchyard stands within the village on the main road, while on the opposite of the road is Church House -- the residence of a former vicar, who willed the property for the use of the parishioners.

Church House is used by the Church as a meeting place and for fund raising events. B.A.D.G.E. (Bilsby and District Group Effort), which is a village organisation, holds its meetings and functions in Church House. The Art Group holds classes here, as does the Sugarcraft Guild. The largest event to take place in Church House is the Annual Bilsby Show which takes place in August. Holy Trinity Church takes part in this event by playing host to a Flower Exhibition.

Holy Trinity Church is constructed of stone covered with stucco and consists of a chancel, North Aisle, Nave, South Porch and West Tower, which is topped with old brick battlements. The windows are Georgian.

The last quinquennial report took place in 2004 and some minor repairs were required. The report also showed that some major stonework would be needed within the next 5-10 years and a specially designated Fabric Fund has been set up to cover these costs. At present all the windows in the main church are being refurbished and double glazed. This work has been fully funded by a generous legacy in 2005.

Although attendance figures have fallen slightly in the last few years, an unfortunate reflection of the age of the attendees, the attitude of the congregation remains positive. It is felt that with a higher profile from the clergy and congregation, and a desire to respond to these changing times, the Church can prove that Christianity is for everyone.
