Fun and Games
24 February 2007
Snakes and Ladders, Beetle, Dominoes, Bagatelle, Boggle and Pub Skittles – these were the games laid out on tables at St Wilfrid’s Church Hall on Saturday February 22nd, for the evening of games organised by Russell and Jessica Carter. Some of the games were wonderfully familiar from childhood – a chance to remember old skills and recall past victories. Russell had carefully prepared a detailed sheet of instructions for each game, so there were no discussions over the correct rules! Each person kept his or her own score and when everyone had played all six games, there was a play-off between the four top scorers to decide the overall winner. In the semi-finals, Barbara Willoughby challenged Georgie Richardson to an entertaining session of the Balancing Board game, while Avril Wells and John Richardson fought a nail-biting and enthralling round of Stack’em High (also known as Jenga). The stack teetered and swayed, but somehow continued to stand long after all the laws of gravity dictated it should surely fall … Barbara and Avril emerged as the finalists. They played magnetic darts, not yet an Olympic sport but definitely under consideration after Saturday night’s spectator treat. Barbara eventually took the crown as Table Games Champion, with Avril a close second. The lowest-scoring competitors played Pub Skittles to decide who should take home the booby prize – to spare the winner’s blushes, there are no names here. Barbara thanked Russell and Jessica for all their efforts – and extracted a promise of another Games Evening in the autumn, something to look forward to. She also organised a tasty curry supper for all contestants.
