A Murder Mystery |

The St Wilfrid’s Social Team recently presented what has become the traditional New Year murder mystery, written as usual by Jill Rundle.
This is such a popular production and they have seriously considered doing it on two nights to meet the demand for tickets, but they settled for a very packed one night stand. The usual suspects were there. Geoff Newstead, recovering valiantly from his hip operation, was a splendid George Cross and was one of the favourites to have ‘done for’ the creepy William Ding. Barbara Willoughby has developed her ‘hard done to’ cook / housekeeper role to a fine art and she has excellent stage presence in addition to being the senior cook for the evening in real life. Ann Lincoln, Pat Andrews and Georgie Richardson were all capable of committing the murder and Norvel Willerton has previous ‘form’ so could not be ruled out. John Murray as Ernest Noates and Chris Pratt as Edward Lord-Grimm gave confident performances and both received support from the voters as stranglers-in-chief. It took the assistance of the narrator Miss Pink to assist a plodding Constable Albert Hall to sort out who had done the murder, and she should know, as in real life she was the one who wrote it! The butler Thomas Pepys, played by Carl Steadman, not only saw it but did it! Elizabeth Ainsworth made her debut as the young suffragette Eleanor Cross and she gave a delightful performance. You know you are in for a treat when the brilliant Len Farrer is on stage and we had two bites of this very sweet cherry as he played the creepy William Ding and the slow thinking Constable Hall. The food and entertainment were enjoyed by all, and Jill is already working on next years performance which will be set in a Scottish Castle. The prospect of seeing all those men in kilts will ensure that the Social Team will need to consider seriously putting on two productions.
