It all started, Tom Evans said, as he and his family were chatting at teatime one day. They were talking about Comic Relief and the need to Do Something. He had the idea of a sponsored bell ringing session and his sister Jemma thought it would be great to include a concert too.
Dad and Mum, Ian and Alison Evans, helped with the organization and publicity and started making cakes and buns. Bellringers from the Alford and Willoughby bands joined in enthusiastically. Karen Gooding agreed to ask her choir to provide the “singing” part of the evening – and it was excellent, as always. Yes, it was a joyous occasion, well supported by the local communities. Originally planned to take place in Willoughby Church on Friday March 16th, it was then moved to St Wilfrid’s, Alford. Joiner John Seymour made the huge “red nose” which advertised the event in St Wilfrid’s porch. The Bishop of Grimsby, Bishop David, sent a generous donation. Tesco Supermarket also sponsored the event with a donation towards the refreshments and Barbara Willoughby and the Social Team were there on the night. We understand that about £100 was raised on Friday night from donations and the Comic Relief sweepstake. In total, the Evans family hopes to be sending about £300 to Comic Relief. Thank you to everyone who took part or donated to this very good cause – and special thanks to Tom and Jemma, who started it. Report by Hilary Barrett
