Church wardens have finally opened the safe at St Andrew’s Church, Farlesthorpe, for the first time in living memory.

Jack Nickson, who has lived in the village for seventy eight years, and was one of the Church Wardens for many years said he had never known the safe to be opened in that time and no one knew what had happened to the key.

After considering breaking into the old safe that had been at the back of St Andrews Church, Wardens were relieved when the keys "turned up" in the bottom of the safe at St Wilfrid’s Church Alford.

"Although we really expected nothing to be in the safe our dreams were of silver or rare documents." said Liz Murray one of Farlesthorpe’s Church Wardens.

At a grand opening on the evening of 26th May 2008 the safe finally revealed its contents. The safe was in surprisingly good condition, the lock opened with ease when Liz turned the huge old key.

The key now has a new "safe" keeper and the safe remains, as it has for so long, completely empty.
